We joined the project to oversee the rehabilitation of a protected building in Granada’s Albaicín, intended to provide six social rental homes. During the archaeological works and initial dismantling, several previously concealed elements came to light: a Mudéjar timber roof structure, a ground-floor gallery, a pool, a cistern and a large earthenware jar.
These discoveries changed the starting conditions. We also took on the development of a new construction project, incorporating the findings while retaining the six planned dwellings and working within the constraints of a publicly funded scheme.
One of the main decisions was to recover the two ground-floor galleries and reorganise this level so that the courtyard could once again become the heart of the building. The three-storey south-facing gallery acts as a circulation space, a transition between inside and outside, and an extension of the homes towards the courtyard and pool.
We also reinstated the entrance hall as the building’s main access and maintained the connection to the adarve leading towards Plaza de San José. A new gate provides a degree of privacy while preserving the relationship between the communal and public spaces.
Inside, we opened up the former Moorish bay to make its original spatial arrangement legible again. The Mudéjar timber roof structure discovered during construction was preserved and restored in its original position, becoming part of the living space. The historic pool and staircases also retained their original layout.
The work required a careful approach, adapting the project as the building revealed new information. This is particularly important when working with historic buildings in the Albaicín: studying what is there before intervening, understanding the existing fabric and adapting the project without losing sight of how the building will be inhabited again.
